Theory and practical exercises include: light and vision; pigments and their properties; the different kinds of primary colours and their respective application; a framework for  visualising colour and tonal relationships; physical colour mixing; glazing and making colour sequences that evoke powerful effects of light.

Materials List

MATERIALS

Preferred medium for the practical exercises is oil paint. Watercolour not used in this class.

– Pen and notebook.
– Cardboard, oil-sketch paper or loose canvas scraps for mixing exercises.
– Loose canvas scraps (to pin to a board) or small stretched canvases for painting exercises.
– Brushes in good condition and a good range of sizes.
– Glass, grey or wooden palette (pref. not white),
– Palette/mixing knife.
– Odourless solvent- small bottle only or use School’s- linseed oil and dipper.
– Old rags and paper towels.
– Oil paints: any basic selection of colours will be fine, but if you want some suggestions try permanent rose, any bright yellow and red, phthalo blue GS, phthalo green YS, and possibly ultramarine or a violet, plus yellow ochre, raw umber, titanium or zinc white and a black such as Winsor & Newton Charcoal Grey or ivory black. Student grade paints should be avoided. If in doubt, ask on Day 1.
– Matisse Carbon Grey acrylic paint and large brush for toning grounds.
