An enjoyable introduction to good practice in drawing and, depending on your level and progress, painting. Using our classical casts or still life objects, students develop observational and basic drawing skills. For beginners, the emphasis in this class is on developing drawing skills as a basis for later progressing  to oil painting. Please be guided by the tutor as to when you are ready to paint.

The student achieves co-ordination of hand and eye and examines the proportion, direction and the form of simple objects. The recognition of structure and the rules of perspective lead the student to the study of light and shade in monochrome.  Tonal still life studies in graphic media provide the basis for tonal anatomical studies.

Tuition is on a one to one basis in a class environment. Students are tutored according to their level and beginners as well as returning and advanced students are catered for in this popular class.

Drawing: An intensive and thorough drawing course for complete beginners, or a useful refresher course for students with some experience. There is no live model in this class. The level is more basic, though nonetheless challenging and fundamental. I explain and demonstrate the difference between measurement and composition, providing insights and skills that are  applicable to drawing any subject from life or imagination alike. Every student receives an introductory presentation and a copy of my resource material, with updates when available, for the duration of enrolment. True to the Ashton’s tradition of teaching, you proceed at your own pace with individual tuition. Along the way, you cultivate the analytical curiosity,  patience and mental agility required to draw both accurately and creatively.
