In this workshop students will spend 3 days developing a single (oil painting) portrait from life. Hours 9.15 am to 3.30pm

Working directly onto the canvas with paint, the portrait will initially be ‘blocked in’ and then carefully modelled over an extended period of time. All aspects of this process will be discussed and demonstrated with individual instruction given.The focus of this workshop will be colour mixing for painting flesh, modelling form and paint handling.

Painting-

Brushes – suggested
Two or three round brushes eg (0 2 4 6)
Flat brushes eg (0 2 4 6)
Small round brush for detail (0)
Hog hair brushes 2 4 6

Canvas
Canvas /board should be no bigger than approx. 30x40cm
Can be purchased in art stores. (I prefer a fine/smooth weave canvas.)
Board is also acceptable (prime using Golden sandable gesso).

canvas and board should be prepared by toning the surface with a neutral tone (#4) on the surface before the class (eg raw umber and small amount of black). This can be done with acrylic or oil paint. I apply a thin coat of paint and wipe it back with a sponge or cloth.

Essential pigments–

Yellow Ochre )
Vermillion (or Cad Red light) )
Alizarin Crimson )
White (Titanium or Cremnitz) ) – all essential colours *
Raw Umber )
Blue – eg Cobalt or Ultramarine )
Earth Red – (Transparent red oxide/Venetian red)
Ivory Black )

Extra/optional

Cad Yellow or Naples Yellow Genuine
Burnt Umber

I mostly use Michael Harding and Old Holland paints but they are expensive. Art Spectrum and Windsor & Newton are acceptable, please no painting kits.

Plumb line (string with weight tied to the end)
Wooden palette –large and clean (or palette suitable for mixing oil paint) *
Palette knife (not plastic) *
Small mirror
Small garbage bag (for painting rubbish) *
Paper towel *
Rags (old T-shirts are good) *
Odourless solvent *
Linseed oil *
Container with a lid for medium (oil + linseed) *
Grey scale
